Type 2 diabetes is a serious disease effecting millions of people today.  Type 2 diabetes is a disease associated with high blood glucose levels, insulin resistance, and insulin deficiency.  It is a condition where there is a lack of insulin in the body or the body cannot efficiently use the insulin.  High blood glucose levels characterize this disease.

It can have terrible consequences such as heart disease, stroke, nerve damage, eye damage, kidney disease (neuropathy), and more if left untreated. People who have diabetes are more than double the risk of developing heart disease than the rest of the population.

About a third of all the people who have type 2 diabetes do not know they have it.  Being aware of the symptoms could drastically improve your chances of identifying the disease before health complications arise.  Take control of the situation and do not put of any of these symptoms.

Here are some symptoms of type 2 diabetes you should be aware of:

Increased Appetite (after eating) – When your body does not get enough insulin to transport the sugar to your cells, your body becomes deprived of energy causing you to be hungry.

Mouth Dryness and Increased Thirst – When sugar is built up in the blood your fluid is pulled from the body making your mouth dry and thirsty.

Weight Loss – Even though you may be eating more than normal if your body is not transporting glucose many calories will be lost and unused glucose will be released during urination.

Fatigue – If your cells do not get enough glucose (sugar) then they will be denied of this energy source and the body will be fatigued and tired.

Headaches – Caused from high blood sugar.  As the sugar builds up in the blood your muscles and organs are deprived of energy and can cause headaches.

Impotence – Diabetes can damage the nerves and blood vessels necessary for an erection.

Frequent Urination – The sugar that is built up in the blood pulls fluid from the tissue causing you to urinate more frequently.

Itchy Skin – Most often caused by the candida albicans fungus associated with diabetes.  Dry skin and dehydration caused by frequent urination can also cause itchy skin.

Dark Skin Changes (acanthosis nigricans) – A sign of insulin resistance.

Numb Hands or Feet – A sign of nerve damage associated with diabetes.  Tingling of the hands and feet is often the first sign of nerve damage.

Blurry Vision – When too much sugar is in your blood your body will attempt to release it.  Sometimes fluid is excreted through the eyes making your vision blurry.

Slow Healing – If you have type 2 diabetes your body’s ability to resist infections and heal will be greatly reduced.

If you have any of these symptoms of type 2 diabetes contact your doctor immediately.  With proper diet and nutrition your chances of developing diabetes can be greatly reduced and you can prevent very serious complications if you identify the disease and start getting treatment.
